The Little Flames

Aged 18, Miles Kane joined The Little Flames as guitarist alongside Eva Petersen (Vocals), Greg Mighall (Drums), Joe Edwards (Bass) and Mat Gregory (Guitar) in December 2004.

The band went on to be vaguely successful, achieving comparisons to The Coral and high profile fans such as the Arctic Monkeys. They also went on to tour with bands like The Coral, The Zutons, The Dead 60s and Arctic Monkeys. However, the band decided to go their separate ways following a dispute with their label over their musical direction.

Was the album ever officially released?
By that, I mean would I be okay to send it to my mate, totally guilt free? ;)

Hometown: Liverpool.

The lineup: Eva Petersen (lead vocals), Joe Edwards (bass), Mat Gregory (guitar), Miles Kane (guitar), Greg Mighall (drums).

The background: The Little Flames are a decent indie band with a good ear for a tune, but they've got this not-so-secret weapon: a regular neo-60s pop-soul belter out front. It's like Dusty Springfield or Sandie Shaw fronting the Pixies or something. Or like a straighter, less gothic Siouxsie Sioux singing with a straighter, less jagged Banshees. Only instead of bewitching ice-maiden moves, Eva Peterson prances about like a druid at Summer Solstice, tambourine in hand, lost in music, a regular tit in a trance.

The Little Flames, four Herberts with pudding-bowl haircuts and a kohl-eyed ingenue on the mic, formed in December 2004 after the members were introduced by dub/punk DJ Babylon Fox. Apparently, they wrote their debut single, Goodbye Little Rose, 18 hours after meeting. Second single Put Your Dukes Up, John was covered by Arctic Monkeys on Leave Before the Lights Come On. In fact, the Monkeys wore Little Flames T-shirts at a recent Astoria gig, where the Liverpudlians were the support act (they've also supported local heroes the Coral and the Zutons). Latest single Isobella recalls Echo & The Bunnymen in their pomp, only with Kim Wilde on vox. They've recorded their debut album in Sweden with the Cardigans' producer so expect a healthy balance between the angular and accessible.

The buzz: "Cool as fuck with red hot tunes to match."

The truth: Isobella is as Jo Whiley-tastic as they come, so a chart entry is a shoe-in (although expect Whiley to interview them in the Live Lounge barefoot).

Most likely to: Cause a resurgence of interest in female-fronted indie bands a la Sleeper and Echobelly.

Least likely to: Receive much acclaim for that resurgence of interest - those female-fronted indie bands were mostly shite.

File next to: Candie Payne, the Sounds, the Cardigans, Catatonia.

What to buy: Isobella is released by Deltasonic on March 26, with the album The Day Is Not Today to follow in June.

Tomorrow's new band: Gallhammer.

Paul Lester

Mentions the album was due to be released in June 2007.
