Indie rocker Miles Kane and his mother Pauline on their special relationship

It's was always just the two of them at home – and they have stayed close

His story Miles Kane, 26, musician

I'm an only child, so it was just me and Mum when I was growing up, which meant our relationship has always been intense. My parents divorced when I was five, but my dad and I have a good relationship.

Mum, along with my two aunts, took over my gran's butcher business. When I was a kid, we'd take it in turns to go stay with my nan at the top of our road for a week every month. As an adult, I often think of how hard that must have been for my ma – raising me, looking after my grandmother and working long hours. I'm just full of admiration for her.

Our relationship hasn't changed much over the years; even when I was in my teens she treated me as an equal. I must have been a bit of a Kevin at times, but I don't think she worried about me because there was no real reason to.

I started getting into music during secondary school. I loved the Pink Panther theme tune at the time, so I decided to learn the saxophone. Mum was so pleased, as she loved her jazz and I'd grown up listening to it at home. But when I was 13, my aunt bought me a little Spanish guitar, and that was it: I was in love, and the sax got dropped. I think Mum was a little disappointed and she may have got nervous when she realised that's what I wanted to do with my life. The music business was such an unknown world to her, but she's been incredibly supportive and proud of me.

The biggest things she has taught me are to work hard and to be cautious. She'll always say: "Be careful!" – and I have taken that on, to an extent. She means everything to me and I'm very thankful for how hard she worked to give me every opportunity possible. I just want to make her proud.

Miles Kane's EP, Give Up, is out now

Her story Pauline Kane, 57, retired

There's a lot said about raising sons and how difficult it is, but Miles has never been a problem. I'm biased, of course, but he's perfect to me.

I always played music in the house: we had a lot of family parties with lots of singing and dancing – it was the way I'd grown up with my parents, too. You don't realise the influence you have on your child at the time, but looking back, Miles's musical education started at home – we connected through music.

The only time I worried about him was when he decided he wanted a career in music. He had a place in college to study graphic design, and that to me felt more solid, more secure, than the music world.

He just turned around one day and said: "Mum, I don't want to go to college." I felt so out of control of the situation – he was going against me! That's probably the moment when I realised that he was a grown-up.

We're very close and there's nothing I can't talk to him about. There have been times in his life when he's been able to turn to me and it works the other way, too. Miles has been there for me as a son and a friend.

It's a grown-up relationship, but I think it's always been that way. It must come down to the fact that it has always been just the two of us at home – there's no one else to throw things at.

I'm incredibly proud of him. He's not afraid to take a risk, and he's strong and independent. You can't pick what your children are going to turn out like, but watching him grow up has made me realise just how lucky I am.

Hey hey hey....

Today was.... AMAZING!! First french show of the tour and I'm sure next time, he'll have the bigger venue!!! :)

He didn't wear his gold shirt so I was a little disappointed but ... he wore red pants so... that was fine...

No, I stop kidding. Musically, it was wonderful, even if the venue is not great... He was really happy to be here. The support band said he was totally crazy about begining his tour!

He didn't play Wendy Wonders but we had Thunderboldt as first song and Shotgun for the end... perfect :P
:P

And finally, absolutely by chance, we found the "place to be" to see him after show... Poor Eugene, there was so much wind and it was a little cold but he stayed with us a while... Time for me to give the kisses I promised I'd give him for you girls! And for sure, taking some pictures! He's a really nice guy and I warn you, you'll have some competition in Paris... There were crazy fans in Lille and there're going to Paris :D :D

Anyway, to resume, really really great evening with Eugene and his band... I upload some pics but with the dark, you know, it's hard to have great pics :(

Enjoy in Paris and all others cities!!!

Here's my little review of yesterday's gig in Paris

We've seen him before the gig, in fact there's a restaurant just near the venue and he was inside...We just saw him when we entered to go to the toilets (yes, you have all the details  :p
:P ) but we didn't go and talk to him as it was a "personnal" moment before the show, eating with someone of the staff...Not the place nor the time to have some fans to bother him

and when we waited outside we've seen Dominic McG, Malcom and after Eugene when he went in backstage... Just saw them, we didn't want to annoyed them  :)

The support was ok, but it's really hard for me to appreciate a band before Eugene  (the same for all the bands/artists i love  :D ).

Then Eugene. He seemed to be very happy of this gig, of his tour, of the great reception he had during all his time in France and so it was a real pleasure to see him so happy  :) We had a lot of smiles  :)

Every night he seems more confident on stage, more "high five" with the first row...  :) And he plays more with his wonderful and so beautiful new white guitar. Seriously, that's a beauty (the guitar  :p
:P )

We had nearly the same setlist as the other nights, maybe with "dolphins were monkeys" that he didn't play in all the venues... So 2 new songs! with Kitty we're not agree on that : i think that "all in all" is "easier" in live when you don't know the song and Kitty thinks that it's the other one, Fairlight! But it's hard to say which one i prefered... So we have to wait and see if they will be on the next album and hear the studio versions...

The crowd was great, as i've said, he had a good reception of the audience, maybe more in Paris where there were more people that already known him !!

After the gig, we didn't wait him, to many people... and so we had a "cocktail" time in Paris, which was the best way to end this wonderful night!  :D

Eugene, if you read that, we had a drink for you, it was great  :D

Full details

Miles Kane has unveiled plans to release his new single 'Give Up' on February 24th.

Turning solo with all the swagger you'd expect from the Scouse songbird, Miles Kane's debut album 'Colour Of The Trap' was a potent, unrelenting document. Spending the bulk of the past 18 months on the road, the songwriter has now signalled his intention to release a blast of new material.

'Give Up' is set to be released on February 24th, with Kid Harpoon claiming a co-write credit and Ian Broudie on production. Available from February 24th, the track will be out digitally as well as on seven inch vinyl - full tracklisting as follows:

EP Tracklisting:
1. ‘Give Up’
2. ‘Woman's Touch’
3. ‘The Competition’
4. ‘Give Up’ (Video)

7" Tracklisting:
A. ‘Give Up’
B. ‘The Competition’

Miles Kane had the following to say about the track: "I wanted the energy and positivity that I've felt in the past 18 months to be reflected on the new album - to make it upbeat and uplifting, and to me that's exactly what ‘Give Up’ does. It doesn't mess around."
